This article over at ArsTechnica reminded me of the insane pricing that is still going on with cabling. With all the hype surrounding HDMI cables, Best Buy still sells $120 HDMI Monster Cables. People, these cables will NOT improve a damn thing over the $13 Monoprice cables. I buy ALL my cables at Monoprice and usually buy them in bulk so I can sell them cheap to friends who’ve been ripped off by Bestbuy.
When the signals being sent over most interconnect cables switched to digital, it’s all 1’s and 0’s. The same racket has happened with Optical (TosLink) cables too. If it’s just fiberoptic light, why do I need to spend more than the bare minimum? Do they send less light? Either the connection is made or it isn’t, end of story.
I think Bestbuy figures that their consumers already paid $2000-$3000 for a TV, I’m sure they won’t balk at a $120 cable. Don’t be fooled!!!
