Not the way I’d like to start the new year

I’ve not blogged in a few weeks, but I couldn’t let this one slip by without comment. Warner Brothers has announced that they will now release movies on Blu-Ray exclusively. As everyone is saying, this could be devastating to HD-DVD. So, I now have 41+ HD-DVD titles and have recommended HD-DVD to more than a few people. The only way out of this, is that I hope CES brings many more dual-format players to market. The HD/Blu-Ray battle can live on with everyone owning a DVD player being able to playback any movie they want. Does anyone think about DVD+R/DL compatibility anymore? Years ago, very few DVD players read back these recordables. Some players didn’t even read DVD+R, opting for the more compatible DVD-R. Today, it’s a non-issue. Unless Toshiba has something up their sleeve, I’m afraid HD may be doomed. For the consumers sake, don’t abandon the technology, lower the cost of the chips and lasers and let all players play back all discs.
