Windows 7 and the first impressions

Just downloaded and I am in the process of installing Windows 7 RTM.  This one is going on a Thinkpad X61, 64 bit Tablet.  Installation was less than 20 minutes, bare metal.  It recognized everything this laptop had including the wireless card and video.  There were already a few update items, most notably a Windows Defender definition update.  On first run of Windows update, it detected and recommend the update of the video drivers, power management, fingerprint reader and a few other hardware drivers.  Reboot was required but surprisingly not for the power management or video driver.  What is the world coming to??!!

Overall fit and finish seem slightly above what the RC was but nothing overly dramatic.  From a tablet computing perspective, Microsoft still writes the book on ease of use and presentation.  This is no exception.  Handwriting recognition accuracy, even with my chicken scratch, was fantastic and they did some nice changes to the recognizer screen.  One nice touch is that the tab for the recognizer screen stays hidden till you touch your pen to the screen, than it appears.  Yes not a critical requirement and will not make the laptop faster but it all goes to the fit and finish comment.  Its a nice touch…

I have to have more to say on this soon.

Update 1:  Damn Lenovo…  System Updater is not compatible with Win7.  It installs and runs but I think the issue is that Lenovo does not yet recognize Windows 7 so it comes up with Vista driver selections.  Issue being that one would have no idea if a driver is actually needed for Windows7 as opposed to Vista SP2.  So for now I will leave things as is.  My guess is something will be in place by he official launch date. Luckily I don’t seem to need any additional drivers.  For me, I can’t really fault Lenovo as this is not available retail.

Update 2: Latest MS office installed without issue as did MS Antivirus beta. So the only thing missing is auto screen rotation and physical Lenovo specific button mapping. Bits like volume and mute worked without issue and their were no components dangling without driver support. DVD burner was recognized and worked as did the Lenovo docking station. I was able to undock cleanly without additional drivers.
