Not the way I’d like to start the new year

Filed under: News, Home Theater — Ryan @ 10:56 am

I’ve not blogged in a few weeks, but I couldn’t let this one slip by without comment. Warner Brothers has announced that they will now release movies on Blu-Ray exclusively. As everyone is saying, this could be devastating to HD-DVD. So, I now have 41+ HD-DVD titles and have recommended HD-DVD to more than a few people. The only way out of this, is that I hope CES brings many more dual-format players to market. The HD/Blu-Ray battle can live on with everyone owning a DVD player being able to playback any movie they want. Does anyone think about DVD+R/DL compatibility anymore? Years ago, very few DVD players read back these recordables. Some players didn’t even read DVD+R, opting for the more compatible DVD-R. Today, it’s a non-issue. Unless Toshiba has something up their sleeve, I’m afraid HD may be doomed. For the consumers sake, don’t abandon the technology, lower the cost of the chips and lasers and let all players play back all discs.

Gmail IMAP Support

Filed under: News — Ryan @ 8:01 pm

Just in case you didn’t catch this last week. Google has introduced IMAP support for Gmail. I’ve used IMAP for many years and I find it much easier to manage than POP email. The difference is that your folders (or in this case, tags) and messages are all stored at the server and you map yourself to the server. So, essentially, delete an email from your desktop client and it deletes from Gmails servers. Want to try another email client, just add the IMAP server and all your mail will come down. It makes life very easy for those on multiple computers, locations, and operating systems. It’s actually easier to explain IMAP than it is POP to some extent.

The only problem is they haven’t turned this on for everyone yet because I STILL don’t have it. To check if you do, go to your Gmail settings and instead of Forwarding and POP, it should say IMAP.

Rawr! Leopard unleashed on the 26th!

Leopard

I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that October 26th is Leopard Day. But what you may have missed was the announcement of the OS X Up-to-Date program. This means that all Mac’s purchased between 10/1 to 12/31 will include a feww upgrade to Leopard. So, if you have been waiting, you can safely buy your mac now. I’m not sure which I’d prefer, buying now and getting a separate shrink-wrapped upgrade and separate set of install discs or getting it bundled. I’m sure the Leopard DVD installer allows a full system wipe before installing, so the end result would essentially be the same.
